Granada, Spain, September 6, 2011—A British-born fine-art printmaker who has lived two thirds of her life in Spain has just launched a new series of printmaking learning videos. She calls them her “Printmaking Master Classes” and with them hopes to help fine-art printmakers “take their printmaking skills to the next level.”Maureen Booth is well known in international printmaking circles, both as co-founder of the World Printmakers printmaking-resource site and as an artist, educator and art activist. “These new learning videos are just a continuation of the teaching I’ve done during most of my life as a printmaking professional,” says Maureen. “Since inaugurating my Gallinero artists’ residence a year and a half ago, and working with printmakers from all over the world, I’ve become aware of what today’s artists are looking for and what they need in terms of techniques and skills. Thanks to this video project designed by Spanish video producer Juan Carlos Romera, artists from all over the world now have access to my printmaking workshops. I find that very exciting.”
Maureen Booth, was formed in printmaking in the late 70’s under the tutelage of the master printmaker José García Lomas at the Rodríguez-Acosta Foundation in Granada. Thanks to a 30-year career as printmaker, editor, and mentor, Maureen is uniquely qualified to impart master classes in fine-art printmaking. “I was impressed with the breadth and depth of Maureen’s printmaking knowledge, as well as her generosity and winning way of imparting it,” says Deborah Maris Lader, founder and director of the Chicago Printmakers Collaborative, who recently did a solar-plate workshop in Maureen’s Granada studio.

The Printmaking Master Classes project launches with five videos, and more are in the pipeline. The first five titles in the series are: Solar Plate Master Class, Liquid Metal Master Class, Creative Printing Master Class, Traditional Etching Master Class, and How to Make a Chop. All of these videos, except the last one, are approximately a half hour long.

“We considered offering the classes on DVD’s,” says Maureen,” but we finally opted for direct video downloads. These are faster and less expensive—and the savings are passed on to clients. Our tests have convinced us that the image and sound quality of our video downloads are as good or better than those of most learning DVD’s available today.”More information at: http://printmakingmasterclasses.com and on Maureen’s blog: http://printmakingclassesinspain.com.

Small World, Milanese Connection, First Writer

with 2 comments

Our old friend, Barbara Mason (from the Atelier Meridian in Portland, Oregon), was kind enough last summer to recommend my etching workshop to a friend called Mary Marjerrison. Mary showed up a couple of weeks ago with her friend, the author, Nancy Tomasetti, the Gallinero’s first writer. Did they come from Oregon? No, they came from Milan, Italy, where they both live. It’s a small world. Hence the silly title of this post.

Mary Marjerrison in Maureen Booth's studiooMary, who works in administration at an international school in Milan was able to rob a week for printmaking thanks to the very civilized Italian tradition of the “Settimana bianca,” a week off school in March. Perhaps it’s because she was previously an art teacher, or because of her high energy level (How many grandmothers do you know who run marathons?), but Mary got straight down to work, preparing her solar-print acetates in the Gallinero in the evenings and showing up in the studio each morning prepared to burn the images onto plates. A Surprise Visitor from London’s Art Workers Guild

001

The phone rang the other morning and it was Monica Grose-Hodge from the Art Workers Guild in London.  She wasn’t in London, though; she was here in Granada doing three days of interviews with local artists and craftspeople. She found me through my Granada Studio Visits display at her hotel, and wanted to know if she could come out for a visit and an interview.  Yes, of course. Read the rest of this entry »

A Print Workshop Central Interviews Sampler

It’s about Interesting People Doing
Interesting Things in Interesting Places

The Print Workshop Central work plan calls for an interview with a representative–usually but not necessarily the studio director–with every studio we put on the PWC site. We knew that this would mean extra work both for us and for the participants, but we thought the interviews might provide a means of seeing printers and print workshops from an inside angle. In the beginning we had no idea how rich and varied these interviews would turn out to be, but we have been delighted to discover a wealth of curious anecdotes, true confessions and delightful surprises from professional printmakers all the way from the tundra of Newfoundland on the North Atlantic Coast of Canada to the semi-tropical balm of New Zealand’s North Island.
