Our Mission
Our mission is to support, preserve, and advance the art of original prints. The Center for Contemporary Printmaking is a nonprofit workshop and gallery recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)(3) organization.
About CCP
Founded in 1995, the Center for Contemporary Printmaking is the only nonprofit institution between New York City and Boston solely dedicated to the art of the print, including printmaking, papermaking, book arts, digital processes, and related disciplines.
CCP has become a unique cultural resource, acclaimed and respected by those interested in works on paper. It is a place to discover, to experiment, to learn. The entire spectrum of printmaking arts is here to be explored through workshops, collaborations with master printers, exhibitions, community programs, and an Artist-in-Residence Program. CCP is located in an historic landmark 19th-century stone carriage house, an architectural gem transformed into an important and dynamic printmaking facility. CCP is open Monday through Saturday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and until 9:00 pm on specific days for independent work. CCP’s Grace Ross Shanley Gallery is open to the public free of charge Monday through Saturday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
Artist Services

Artists can rent the studios by the hour, day, or week to work independently or in collaboration
with others.
Special Projects/Private Tutorials

printer for an hourly rate. Tutorials can be designed for artists to work one-on-one with
experienced printmakers to explore specific printmaking techniques.

International Artist-in-Residence:
Russian Printmaker Comes to CCP
In September, CCP welcomes its first International Artist-in-Residence, Vladimir Zuev, for a residency at the Helen Frankenthaler Printmaking Cottage. Sponsored by a generous grant from the Jeniam Foundation, the residency program offers an international printmaker of renown the opportunity to pursue printmaking projects. Mr. Zuev will spend two weeks at CCP and, as part of the residency, will share his creative insights in programs to area high-school students. He will offer an overview of his residency to CCP members and friends on Thursday, September 25, from 7 to 9 pm.
The program is free and open to all. Mr. Zuev is from Nizhny Tagil, in the Ural Mountains of Siberia. Growing up in the Soviet Union in what was then a remote province, Mr. Zuev had little access to art, and as a child he taught himself by looking at reproductions of masterpieces in a book. He subsequently graduated from a Graphic Arts Faculty and went on to become a highly regarded printmaker, the winner of numerous awards, whose work is widely exhibited and collected. He still lives in Nizhny Tagil, where he maintains a studio and teaches drawing and graphics.
Mystery Artist Redux
Members of CCP’s Editions Club are once again in the dark. Another Mystery Artist has been selected to produce an edition of prints exclusively for members of the club. The identity of the artist will be brought to light only at a reception on Thursday, October 23, when the print will be unveiled. This year’s artist exhibits regularly in New York and is featured in major museum collections, including the Museumof Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Morgan Library & Museum. The artist has received numerous accolades, including many grants and fellowships. A distinguished member of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, the artist lives and works in New York.
In 2007, Editions Club members were delighted with Donald Sultan’s print Black and Blues. A few subscriptions to the Editions Club are still available. Please contact CCP to sign up.

Interview with Leslie Nolan,
Center for Contemporary Printmaking Executive Director
Q. Looking at your website makes me want to go there now. Could you tell us a bit about how the CCP project got off the ground?
A: Through the generosity and vision of founder Grace Shanley and many others, the Carriage House to the Lockwood-Mathews Mansion was restored after years of neglect and transformed into a fine art print shop and gallery. In thirteen years the organization has grown from its original identity as the Connecticut Graphic Arts Center into the Center for Contemporary Printmaking. CGAC was rebranded into CCP in 2001.
Q. Founded in 1995, the Center has been working for 13 years now. Can you sum up its achievements briefly?
A: CCP has been and still is an established venue for acclaimed exhibitions and edition printing projects. Many internationally recognized artists have both exhibited and printed at CCP since its introduction to the Fairfield County community. CCP also places great emphasis on education and offers a broad range of workshops for members and an outreach program focusing on youth from the local school systems. The Artist-in-Residency program located in the fully equipped Helen Frankenthaler Printmaking Cottage will have its second international artist-in-resident in September 2008. CCP is also home of the MONOTHON, an annual printmaking marathon and fundraiser dedicated solely to monotypes and monoprints.
Q: What do you consider to be the high points in that period of time?
A: CCP ran a strong capital campaign that was realized in December 2007, giving the organization a strong financial base to work from as CCP moves into future successes. The tenth anniversary of MONOTHON will happen in November of 2008, and CCP will celebrate an annual fundraiser that has grown more successful with each year! The Artist-in-Residency program, boasting a newly named Helen Frankenthaler Printmaking Cottage will host a Russian artist and printmaker, Vladimir Zuev in September and look to continue to attract applications from national and international artists.
Q: What kind of people use the Center’s facilities, and in what percentages?
A: There is a range. Visitors cover a spectrum from international and prestigious, to walk-ins coming to see exhibitions. Outside of the staff, CCP members use the facilities the most. Whether it is a studio rental, private tutorial or workshop, members are the foundation of the organization. CCP also has artists and printmakers stay in the HFP Cottage working on their own projects or teaching workshops in the main building and using the cottage as a residence for the duration of their workshop.
Q: Your website shows an impressive list of sponsors. Would it be indiscreet to ask you how the Center got them. Was one of those foundation directors a printmaker?
A: Yes, there are some sponsors who print or have printed during their career. CCP is both lucky and grateful to have the local support system it does. All of the sponsors have demonstrated their commitment to CCP’s mission, to support, preserve, and advance the art of original prints.
Q: I understand your exhibitions are regularly reviewed by the New York Times. (Congratulations.) How did that happen?
A: CCP continues to showcase strong work by both established and emerging artists. Annually, CCP exhibits exciting thematic shows, international shows, solo shows for established artists, and competitive juried shows with relevant jurors who are highly respected in their field.
Q: I notice your impressive list of workshops includes “digital technology.” How long have you been doing that? What’s the response of your public to digital prints?
A: That workshop has been full with a waitlist for the past 5 years. The response to the digital method of printmaking has been mixed. Members in that specific workshop couldn’t be more excited about it, but others still question the validity of it as an art form. There is a running dialog between the two perspectives and that is good for the membership’s artistic growth.
Q: A lot of people who read this will be interested in your artist’s residency program. Would you like to comment on its high points?
A: The Helen Frankenthaler Printmaking Cottage is fully equipped with a 39″x 72″ motorized Takach etching press, 28″x 48″ manual Martech etching press, commercial sink, drying rack, light table, large working tables, wall space and other studio amenities. The cottage also furnishes a kitchen with fridge, bedroom, full bathroom, washer and dryer and a sitting room that can be used as a second bedroom. Anything not readily available in the cottage will be available in the main building. Restaurants and a small grocery store are with in walking distance, as well as Metro-North train service to New York City.
Q: What did Norwalk, CT do to deserve a place like the CCP?
A: The city of Norwalk supports CCP with a long-term lease and has allowed CCP to renovate the interiors of two historical buildings.
